Starnaheim: The City Under the Stars
Atop a stony plateau lies the ruins of a city whose inhabitants worshipped the stars. It is always night above, the stars blazing down upon the former city.
Wandering Monsters
2-in-6 chance per turn that there is an encounter, rolled on the table below:
- 1d3 cultists from area (6.) praying to the stars;
- 1d3 cultists and their leader (from area 8.), praying to the stars above;
- A Star-Spawn [AC as chain, HD 3, #Ats 2 tentacles (1d6/1d6); immune to spells, vulnerable to sunlight, touch causes madness (save allowed) as per a confusion spell for 1d3 turns] out hunting;
- A shower of Falling Stars that deal 1d6 damage to everyone, save to avoid. The shower is over as quickly as it begun, and leaves behind 3d6 yellow gemstones worth 25 gp apiece;
- 2d6 skeletons [AC as leather & shield, HD 1, #Ats 1 bony claw (1d4); undead] that were the original inhabitants of this ruined settlement;
- Roll twice, combining the encounter in some exciting fashion.
Key:
- The ruins of the city hide the cult that worships the stars from here, as well as the device that will lower the barrier protecting the relic in its tower.
- A shell-like building with a set of stairs inside leading down. A protective-circle (acts as a protection from evil spell) has been carved into the hard stone ground, which the cultists use when dealing with the star-spawns that sometimes come visiting.
- The stairs lead into a room painted expertly with the starscape of the night sky above. A ladder leads further down, and three animated statues [AC as chain, HD 3, #Ats 1 fist (2d6); immune to mundane attacks] of goat-headed men guard the ladder, allowing only the cultists to use it.
- Here lies the pedestal on which the globe must be placed to lower the barrier. More stars are painted on the walls, but these depict the night sky above the tower where the relic is housed.
- This chamber of the cultists has a fire-pit, rack with dried fish and cooked meat hanging from it, as well as a pair of spears. There is a 2-in-6 chance that 1d3 of the cultists are here.
- The lair of the cultists, 1d3 of which will be here if not already encountered. They have nothing of value with them: Cultists (3) [AC as leather, HD 2, #Ats 1 dagger (1d4); spells as 2nd-level clerics & 2nd-level magic-users].
- The cult's leader uses this room as his own living area, and this chamber has its own fire-pit and rations, as well as a crystal ball on a silver tripod (worth 150 gp).
- The cultist leader [AC as leather, HD 5, #Ats 1 staff (1d6+1); cast spells as a 5th-level cleric & 5th-level magic-user, can summon a Star-Spawn 1/turn, takes 3 rounds] lives here, with a bed, table and stool, and a locked iron chest that holds the crystal globe, which is filled with the night-sky full of stars.
